This week’s artist conversation was with Sean Joy Cabanig. She is currently an undergraduate here at California State University Long Beach. She is working in the bfa metals department here in CSULB. Cabbing is originally from Los Angeles, but is now currently living in Long Beach. Some of her interests are that she loves reading, gaming, and cats. She’s also in the studio a lot where she experiments with different materials. She likes to keep active and just keep her creative juices flowing. The ideas she explores are that her work kind of journals her emotions and daily life. Also they just explore what ever project she is given at that time from the professor. She likes to inject humor and emotion into her pieces as well. Cabanig’s art pieces are inspired by her everyday thoughts, environment, humor and just about anything that pops into her mind.
The formal qualities in Cabanig’s pieces are all made of metal. They all have the same color scheme to them which ranges from a rusty dark brown color to a light silvery color. Some of the pieces she made like the metal necklace with the round sphere shows a sense of a modern, but rustic feel. Most of her work’s texture and qualities just depend on what the piece is. Like the penis piece where it looks realistic because she tries to capture each art work with its real life qualities. And the bowls and plates Cabanig made were very delicate. They looked very smooth and thin. The drawing of the white flowers inside were not as smooth, a bit shaky, but nicely incorporated.
These art pieces are just about anything that deals with Cabanig’s daily life. Nothing specific was on her mind while creating this pieces. However, she does like to incorporate a bit of emotion or humor into her pieces to really show others about who she is as a person. These pieces are inspired by her environment and emotion, as well as random thoughts. Cabanig gathers up her emotions in her daily life which she then creates an art work depending on however she’s feeling or whatever she is inspired by that day.
This week I really enjoyed this artist because most of her works revolve around her inspirations in her daily life. I always thought artists had some kind of special interest which they then channel it and make it into an art work. However, from getting to know Cabanig and what her works explore, it made me realize a lot of things. This resonates within my life because I feel like when I meet someone for the first time, I always thought I had to be polished and not weird. But, Cabanig’s works made me realize to just be myself and be real! Her pieces are real and they are inspired just by daily life emotions and random thoughts.
